Help with using 4Matrix
Problems related to the use of Excel

Excel version 95, 97
Excel version 2000 |
Excel 95-7will not support all features of 4Matrix. Errors will be experienced. Excel 2000 will partly work. We are no longer able to create bespoke versions to run on Excel 2000. |
Excel versions 2001-2006 |
These versions of Excel will support all features of the 4Matrix application |
Excel version 2007 |
This new version of Excel doesn't have backward compatibility with previous versions and will not support 4Matrix applications created in the period 2003-2007. A separate 4Matrix application will be needed for schools using Excel 2007. Click here to see the version of 4MFilemaker to use. |
Schools that have switched to Excel 2007 should still have an active license for Excel 2003-6 in most cases.
It is possible to run Excel 2001-6 on the same computer as Excel 2007. To run 4Matrix on a computer where there are two versions of Excel it is necessary to launch Excel 2003-6, and then drag and drop the 4Matrix school application onto the Excel window. The same is true when using the 4MFilemaker application to generate 4Matrix. |
The Excel setting Tools>Macro>Security should be set to Medium.
If Macros have been disabled, 4Matrix will not display its customised tool menus and interactive functions will not be available. All the user will see is a series of passive graphs.

One
school reports that it has moved to OpenOffice and that 4Matrix
doesn't now work with their spreadsheet software. 4Matrix is
an advanced Excel application and only works in tandem with Excel.
The solution is to put a copy of Excel 2003-2006 back on the school system for use with 4Matrix.
If a 4Matrix application is closed using CTRL/ALT/DEL, or if there is an error while using 4Matrix, it may close without running the end routine which resets toolbars and menus back to their initial state. These can be reset manually, but the small application ToolBar Fix will do this automatically. Either click the link below to run it directly, or save this utility from the link below, then double-click to run it.
Excel toolbars need resetting?
Right click
here to download ToolBar Fix (Save Target As...)
Use
this if Excel toolbars need resetting
to their defaut.
This can happen if Excel is closed before the end routine in 4Matrix can reinstate the Excel toolbars.
This little Excel application will do that for you. Double click it. Choose to 'Enable Macros'. You will see nothing happen!
But then you will find Excel is as it should be.
Problems related to the use of 4Matrix on school networks
In some cases schools networks will have been set to disallow the running of Macros, or have disabled the mechanism that supports the use of hyperlinks in Excel. In these cases 4Matrix will not run as intended. Teachers have often got round this problem by using 4Matrix with their laptop computer - assuming the the laptop doesn't have the same network settings.
If
you are experiencing any problems that are due to errors in 4Matrix itself then
please let us know and we will try to resolve them. Contact Mike at mike@4matrix.org
